Question from fediverse: isn't Holochain patented?

Needs a clear sorta-official answer and explanation. Anybody want to respond in the fediverse?

This was from over a year ago and I think there was some follow up around the patent too, but didn’t find it within 5 min.
This explains mostly why they did take a patent and more:
